What you leave, and to whom.
Questions
- What is the difference between a TFSA successor holder and a beneficiary?
- A spouse or common-law partner named successor holder takes over the TFSA and keeps its tax-free room intact. A named beneficiary receives the value, but the room is not preserved the same way.
- How do beneficiary designations avoid probate?
- Registered accounts and insurance with a named beneficiary pass directly to that person, outside the estate, so they generally skip probate and the fees and delay it carries.
- What income would my survivor keep?
- The survivor estimator combines survivor CPP, surviving pension entitlements, and directly transferred assets to approximate the income a partner retains if you die first.
